Austria turns Adolf Hitler’s birthplace into police station

The Austrian government has repurposed the terraced house where Adolf Hitler was born into a functioning police station, completing a project initiated over a decade ago. The government acquired the property in 2017, and renovation plans were formally announced in 2019. The transformation cost approximately 20 million euros and now houses officers from both district and local police forces. Officials view the conversion as a means to eliminate the building's symbolic appeal to extremist groups and to demonstrate the community's commitment to confronting its historical legacy. Mayor Johannes Waidbacher stated that the change would bring clarity and reassurance to residents, while Interior Ministry officials emphasized that the new function strips the location of its historical mystique. However, critics argue that altering the building's purpose cannot erase its historical significance or prevent determined visitors from recognizing its association with the Nazi leader. Some local residents expressed disappointment with the decision, having preferred alternative uses such as maintaining a charitable organization at the site. Officials noted that a charitable presence would have made the building too accessible to the public, influencing the final decision to establish a police station instead.
