Rabat demands answers after Moroccan man dies during arrest in Italy

A Moroccan national died during police detention in Bologna, Italy, prompting diplomatic demands for accountability and triggering civil unrest in the city. Video evidence shows officers pressing him to the ground for an extended period before his death occurred. Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally requested that Italian authorities provide complete details of the incident and establish responsibility for what occurred.

The death sparked significant public reaction in Bologna. Demonstrations erupted on Monday as residents protested the police's handling of the situation. Clashes between protesters and law enforcement resulted in injuries on both sides, with Italian police reporting 54 officers hurt and media sources indicating 11 protesters were also injured. Prosecutors initiated an investigation into the circumstances of Fakir's death.

Italian leadership acknowledged the severity of the incident. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the death was unacceptable and committed to pursuing the truth through thorough investigation without bias. However, she also condemned the violence that accompanied the protests, distinguishing between legitimate calls for accountability and destructive actions that endangered public safety. Fakir's family members participated in a rally organized by Bologna's mayor, with his niece emphasizing that their focus was on seeking truth rather than revenge or retribution.
