Qatar set to host FIBA U18 Asia Cup Gulf qualifiers
Qatar will host the FIBA U18 Asia Cup Gulf qualifiers from 25–30 July, featuring five Gulf nations competing for three spots at the continental championship in India. The tournament serves as the region's official qualifying route, with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman competing in round-robin format.
Doha has been selected to host the Gulf qualifying tournament for the FIBA U18 Asia Cup, with matches scheduled for 25–30 July following a postponement from the originally planned 17–22 July dates. Five Gulf-region nations will participate in a round-robin competition, with the top three finishers securing direct qualification to the continental U18 Asia Cup, which India will host in August.
The tournament structure begins on 25 July with Kuwait facing Oman and Saudi Arabia meeting Bahrain. Qatar, as the host nation, will commence their group-stage campaign against Saudi Arabia on 26 July, followed by matches against Kuwait on 27 July, Oman on 29 July, and Bahrain on 30 July to conclude the preliminary round.
Beyond regional significance, the U18 Asia Cup functions as Asia's final qualifying pathway for the 2027 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup, scheduled for the Czech Republic in summer 2027. The top four Asian finishers at the U18 championship will earn berths in that world championship.
Qatar brings considerable experience in hosting youth basketball competitions, having previously staged the 2014 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship and the 2022 and 2023 editions of the FIBA U16 Asian Championship. The nation is also preparing for a larger milestone: hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027, marking the first time the tournament will take place in the Middle East.
