Trump vows to help Lebanon but offers no timeline for Israeli withdrawal

During the White House meeting, Trump stated the United States would provide assistance to Lebanon but offered no concrete policy announcements or withdrawal timeline for Israeli forces.

When questioned about Israeli redeployment, Trump indicated that forces were in the process of repositioning to other areas. However, the factual situation differs from this characterization. Israel has maintained occupation of territories since March without withdrawing from any previously held areas. The US State Department announced establishment of a pilot zone framework intended to allow Lebanese army deployment to previously occupied towns and prevent Hezbollah military presence, enabling reconstruction and civilian return. The three towns designated in the initial pilot zone were not under Israeli control, meaning no Israeli withdrawal occurred to establish these areas.

Lebanese President Aoun praised Trump and the US-brokered framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which ties Israeli withdrawal to Hezbollah disarmament. Aoun stated his objective is ending the state of hostility between the two nations permanently. He did not address documented Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, which have included systematic destruction of villages and targeting of medical personnel and journalists.

Trump also reiterated his suggestion that Syria should intervene militarily to assist in disarming Hezbollah, a proposal Syrian authorities have repeatedly rejected. Trump expressed admiration for Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, characterizing him as having unified Syria. The broader context includes over 4,000 Lebanese deaths resulting from regional conflict that intensified earlier in the year.
