Bangladesh face Australia Test might as Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon return

Australia's cricket team will field a strengthened squad for its upcoming two-Test home series against Bangladesh next month, with three key players returning from injury. Captain Pat Cummins, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, and veteran spinner Nathan Lyon have been included in the 13-man squad announced for matches scheduled in Darwin and Mackay, which form part of the World Test Championship cycle.

The return of these three players marks a significant development for Australia's bowling attack. Hazlewood, a 35-year-old with 295 Test wickets at an average of 24.21, has been sidelined by hamstring and Achilles injuries that forced him to miss the entire Ashes series. His recall comes despite strong performances from Scott Boland, who took 20 wickets during Australia's recent 4-1 victory over England. Chief selector George Bailey acknowledged the competition between the two bowlers, noting that Boland has made a compelling case for inclusion among Australia's elite fast bowlers.

The squad composition reflects several strategic considerations. Jake Weatherald has been retained as an opener following Usman Khawaja's retirement, though the left-hander struggled in his Ashes debut, averaging 22.33 across five matches. Cameron Green has also maintained his position despite a disappointing Ashes campaign with both bat and ball. Bailey indicated that selectors remain optimistic about the opening partnership between Weatherald and Travis Head, expressing hope for improvement at Test level.

Australia currently sits atop the World Test Championship table midway through the cycle.
