MSF demands Israel release detained Palestinian healthcare workers

Doctors Without Borders has issued a formal call for the immediate release of Palestinian healthcare workers held by Israeli authorities, expressing strong disapproval of their detention and treatment conditions. The humanitarian organization characterized the situation as involving medical professionals imprisoned in poor conditions without legitimate cause, representing what it views as a systematic pattern of targeting health sector personnel across Palestinian territories.

The case of a hospital director in northern Gaza has drawn particular attention from the organization. This physician has been held in solitary confinement for an extended period and has reportedly experienced torture while in custody. His detention exemplifies what the organization describes as an established pattern of Israeli authorities detaining and targeting medical staff throughout Palestine.

According to monitoring organizations, the scale of healthcare worker detention is substantial. A human rights group focused on physicians reports that more than 50 medical professionals are currently imprisoned in conditions described as inhumane, including at least 15 doctors. These organizations have pursued legal remedies, including petitions to higher courts seeking the detainees' release. Data from earlier in the year indicates that since military operations began in October 2023, hundreds of Palestinian healthcare workers have been detained by Israeli forces, with some reportedly killed while in custody.

Doctors Without Borders has also highlighted the case of an orthopedic surgeon imprisoned for over 600 days following his arrest while employed at a hospital facility. The organization emphasized that detained medical personnel require access to adequate healthcare and humane conditions during their detention.

The organization criticized the international response to the situation, stating that numerous world leaders have failed to publicly condemn Israeli conduct in Palestinian territories. It called for unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained medical personnel and noted that recent international bodies, including UN commissions, have similarly called for the release of detained healthcare workers.
