Singapore minister resigns over ‘interactions with a woman’, PM says

Singapore's ruling People's Action Party faces renewed scrutiny after Faishal Ibrahim, the acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, stepped down from his cabinet position and party membership. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong disclosed that Ibrahim's resignation followed interactions with a woman, primarily conducted through online messages and occasional meetings at public events. Both individuals lodged harassment allegations against each other, prompting police involvement in the matter. Wong clarified that no criminal offence occurred and no charges would be pursued, yet he determined that Ibrahim's conduct failed to meet the behavioural standards required of elected officials and parliamentarians. In his resignation statement, Ibrahim acknowledged a lapse in judgment, noting he had not established appropriate boundaries early enough, though he emphasized no physical relationship developed. Ibrahim had served as a member of parliament since 2006 before assuming his ministerial role in 2025. Wong expressed regret at Ibrahim's departure from political life under these circumstances. The resignation adds to a pattern of recent scandals affecting Singapore's governing party, which has historically maintained a reputation for integrity. Previous incidents include a 2023 corruption investigation involving then-Transport Minister Subramaniam Iswaran, who later admitted to accepting over 380,000 Singapore dollars in gifts from Malaysian billionaire Ong Beng Seng in exchange for advancing business interests.
