India’s cockroach politics is no joke

A political movement born from public insult has grown into a significant challenge to India's establishment. The Cockroach Janta Party originated in mid-May following remarks by Chief Justice Surya Kant, who used derogatory language to describe unemployed youth. Rather than fade as a typical viral moment, the movement has mobilized substantial youth support and organized sustained street demonstrations.

The escalation came when police removed educator-activist Sonam Wangchuk from a sit-in protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar observatory after 21 days of an indefinite hunger strike, transporting him to hospital against his will. Party founder Abhijeet Dipke subsequently began his own hunger strike. Demonstrators have organized to march toward Parliament, demanding accountability from Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan regarding widespread university entrance exam leaks that triggered national outrage. Some protesters have called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resignation as well.

The movement's power lies in its symbolic resonance. For many young Indians confronting unemployment, educational corruption, and rising living costs, the cockroach metaphor captured an existing sense of marginalization and invisibility. By reclaiming the insult as a badge of identity, the movement transformed humiliation into political visibility and collective voice.

Authorities initially employed measured containment—permitting protests within restricted parameters while monitoring their expansion. The recent police intervention suggests the government now views the movement as a genuine threat rather than a passing social-media phenomenon. The cockroach has become a rallying point for broader discontent with institutional accountability and economic opportunity in contemporary India.
