Pakistan cricketer Nawaz sanctioned after cannabis-related positive test
Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Nawaz has received a three-month ban from the International Cricket Council following a positive test for a cannabis-related substance. The 32-year-old all-rounder tested positive after Pakistan's T20 World Cup match in February and admitted the violation was unrelated to sporting performance.
The International Cricket Council has sanctioned Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz with a three-month suspension after he tested positive for Carboxy-THC, a metabolite of cannabis classified as a Substance of Abuse under the ICC's Anti-Doping Code. The 32-year-old tested positive following Pakistan's T20 World Cup match against the Netherlands in February.
Nawaz admitted to the violation and demonstrated that the substance had been used outside of competition in a manner unrelated to sporting performance. The suspension was backdated to May 1, when Nawaz began a voluntary provisional suspension. After serving approximately two and a half months under provisional suspension and agreeing to complete a rehabilitation programme, the provisional suspension was lifted.
In accordance with the ICC's anti-doping regulations, Nawaz's records from the Netherlands match on February 7 and all subsequent matches through May 1 have been disqualified. During the T20 World Cup tournament in Sri Lanka, Nawaz participated in all seven of Pakistan's matches, from their opening game against the Netherlands through the Super Eights stage where the team was eliminated. He accumulated 15 runs and took seven wickets across the tournament.
