The full story

A tragic transportation accident in Uganda's Kapchorwa district has claimed the lives of 20 schoolchildren and one adult, with dozens more injured. The bus, operated by King David Junior School, was en route back to Kampala after an educational excursion to Sipi Falls when the incident occurred near Chekwatit village. According to police investigations, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the roadway and overturn after striking a large stone.

The immediate aftermath saw community members arriving at the crash site before official rescue teams were deployed, with residents helping to transport victims away from the wreckage using available vehicles. Hospital officials reported that more than 28 children required medical treatment, with nine in critical condition. Three additional adults sustained injuries in the crash. The adult fatality is believed to be the school's founder and head, though authorities have not yet disclosed the identities or ages of the deceased children.

In response to the accident, Uganda's government announced a comprehensive suspension of all school trips and excursions, effective immediately and continuing until further notice. This decision reflects broader concerns about transportation safety in the country, where road accidents occur with concerning frequency. Uganda's road network ranks among the most dangerous globally, with crashes frequently attributed to excessive speed, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and deteriorating road conditions. The incident follows other recent fatal collisions, including a bus-truck crash earlier in the month that killed 14 people and a multi-vehicle collision in October that resulted in 46 deaths.
