US seeks extradition of wealthy pro-Palestine donor from Spain

The United States has initiated extradition proceedings against James 'Fergie' Chambers, a prominent donor to Palestinian causes, who was detained in Ibiza on an international arrest warrant. US authorities allege that Chambers provided material support to Hamas, the Palestinian governing authority designated as a terrorist organisation by Washington. Chambers, an heir to the Cox Communications family fortune, is currently imprisoned in Madrid while Spain's High Court considers the extradition request within a 40-day window.

Chambers has contributed more than $1 million to pro-Palestine organisations and humanitarian projects in Gaza. His partner, Stella Schnabel, characterised the case as political persecution, arguing he was being targeted for his support of Palestinian causes and humanitarian work. Legal experts and rights advocates have expressed concern that the extradition request signals a broader Trump administration effort to suppress Palestine solidarity activism both domestically and internationally.

Spanish lawmakers and officials have raised objections to the extradition request, citing inconsistency with Spain's own stated positions on Palestinian rights. Spain's government has formally recognised Palestine as a state and has been critical of Israel's military operations in Gaza. The case has drawn attention from international legal observers, who view it as part of a wider campaign targeting pro-Palestine activists, including through immigration enforcement and activist blacklists.
