Utah man arrested after allegedly targeting Muslim kiosk worker in stabbing

A stabbing attack at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah on Monday has renewed concerns about religiously motivated violence in the United States. The victim, a Muslim man working at a mall kiosk, was approached by the suspect who inquired about his name and religion before requesting water. As the victim turned to retrieve the water, the attacker began stabbing him repeatedly. Bystanders restrained the suspect until police arrived at the scene.

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds and was transported to hospital in critical condition. According to a GoFundMe campaign organized by a friend, the victim sustained 15 stab wounds and required multiple surgeries. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct. Court affidavits indicate Larsen admitted targeting the victim specifically because of his Muslim faith and expressed intent to kill Muslims. Investigators warned he posed a substantial danger to the public based on his violent actions, ideologies, and references to pre-planned mass casualty events.

Muslim advocacy organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, condemned the attack. Civil rights advocates have documented rising anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States, attributing escalation to anti-immigration rhetoric, white supremacism, and tensions surrounding Israel's military operations in Gaza. Recent years have witnessed deadly attacks targeting Muslim communities, including the 2023 fatal stabbing of a six-year-old Palestinian American boy in Illinois and a 2026 mosque shooting in San Diego that killed five people.
