Thousands gather in Srebrenica to mark 31 years since genocide

A major commemorative event took place at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina, drawing mourners, survivors, foreign dignitaries, and religious leaders to mark three decades since one of Europe's deadliest post-World War II atrocities. The gathering included an annual peace march and the burial of ten victims whose remains had recently been identified through ongoing investigative efforts.

On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces captured the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica, which had been designated a protected safe area by the United Nations Security Council, and systematically killed more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys over several days. The massacre remains widely recognized as the worst atrocity committed in Europe since the Holocaust.

Denis Becirovic, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized that preserving historical truth about the genocide was essential for maintaining stability and building a viable future. International representatives, including the Dutch ambassador, stressed that education represents one of the most effective tools for preventing similar violence and translating remembrance into meaningful action.

Investigators continue to search for remains in mass graves surrounding the area, with more than a thousand victims still missing. The annual July 11 burial ceremony has become a solemn ritual as identification efforts proceed. Global figures, including Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, used the anniversary to call for renewed commitment to combating violence and dehumanization worldwide.
