The full story

A speedboat accident near Vietnam's Phu Quoc island resulted in the deaths of 15 Indian tourists on Saturday. The vessel, which carried 32 Indian tourists and four crew members, overturned approximately 400 meters from Hon May Rut Ngoai island as it returned to An Thoi International Port. Twenty-one people were rescued from the water, and those who sustained injuries received hospital treatment.

Witnesses reported that nearby boats responded quickly to the emergency, pulling passengers from the water before Vietnamese border guards, navy personnel, and coastguard units arrived at the scene. Rescue efforts were complicated by the fact that many victims remained trapped inside the capsized vessel. Social media imagery documented rescue workers attempting to revive victims pulled from the water.

India's embassy in Hanoi activated control rooms in both the capital and Ho Chi Minh City to coordinate with the families of those affected. The embassy stated that rescue operations by Vietnamese authorities were ongoing and that exact details of the incident were still being determined.

Phu Quoc, situated in the Gulf of Thailand, ranks among Vietnam's most visited beach destinations, attracting millions of tourists annually. The incident follows a similar maritime disaster in July when the tourist boat Wonder Sea capsized in Ha Long Bay during a thunderstorm, killing 39 people in one of Vietnam's deadliest sea accidents.
