Trump threatens Iran after chants for his death erupted at Khamenei funeral

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply following the funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during which calls for President Trump's assassination were reportedly made. Israeli intelligence alerted the US to what was described as a specific and active plot against Trump, prompting the US Secret Service to request he change aircraft while departing a NATO summit in Turkey.

Trump responded with a forceful statement on his Truth Social platform, declaring that 1,000 missiles were locked and aimed at Iran, with thousands more ready to follow should the Iranian government act on assassination threats. He stated that US military forces were prepared for a one-year period to completely destroy Iranian territory, subject to extension.

The escalation follows recent military exchanges near the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian attacks on tankers prompted US air strikes on Iranian provinces, which were met with Iranian retaliatory missile and drone attacks on US-linked military facilities in the region. Trump characterized the provisional ceasefire as over, though he indicated that talks on finalizing a peace deal would continue.

Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf responded by stating that Tehran would never surrender to the United States and remained fully prepared to defend itself if Washington abandoned the Pakistani-brokered memorandum of understanding. He emphasized that while ending the war was a priority, the conflict would not conclude with Iranian capitulation.

Despite the exchange of ultimatums and military strikes, high-stakes diplomatic negotiations have continued behind the scenes, with Qatari mediators traveling to Tehran to facilitate discussions.
