Who is Fadel Shaker? Lebanese pop star released on bail

Fadel Shaker, a prominent Lebanese pop singer, secured his release from custody after Lebanese judicial authorities granted him bail. The artist posted a bail amount of 500 million Lebanese pounds, equivalent to approximately $5,500, and was released following questioning regarding an extensive list of charges. These allegations encompassed membership in an armed group, financing armed organizations, money laundering, and participation in the 2013 Sidon clashes between government forces and followers of Sunni Muslim leader Ahmed al-Assir.

Shaker rose to regional prominence during the 1990s and 2000s as a romantic ballad singer, earning the nickname "prince of romance." His career included multiple successful albums, with hits such as 'Ya Ghayeb' achieving widespread popularity across the Arab world. However, in 2012, Shaker announced his retirement from music on religious grounds, declaring the profession "sinful." Following this decision, he transitioned to performing religious hymns at rallies supporting al-Assir, whose movement was characterized by hardline Sunni positions and opposition to Hezbollah's alliance with Syria's government.

In 2013, armed clashes erupted in Sidon's Abra neighborhood when al-Assir's supporters opened fire on a military checkpoint, resulting in the deaths of 18 Lebanese soldiers and between 25 and 40 of al-Assir's fighters. A viral video from that period showed Shaker making inflammatory remarks about the casualties. A military tribunal tried Shaker in absentia in 2020, sentencing him to 22 years total imprisonment, comprising 15 years of hard labor for involvement in terrorist acts and seven years for financing al-Assir's organization.

While Shaker acknowledges his support for al-Assir, he maintains his innocence regarding direct participation in the Sidon clashes. Al-Assir himself was arrested in 2015 while attempting to leave Lebanon and subsequently received a death sentence in 2017, followed by a separate 20-year hard labor sentence in 2021. Shaker surrendered to police in October of the previous year, after which authorities reportedly dropped his earlier sentences.
