Rights group plans complaint to IOC against Infantino over Trump support
Human rights group FairSquare announced plans to file a complaint with the International Olympic Committee against FIFA President Gianni Infantino, alleging he violated political neutrality rules through public support for US President Donald Trump. The complaint also questions the legitimacy of FIFA's new Peace Prize and its award to Trump.
FairSquare, a human rights organization, escalated its dispute with FIFA by announcing an intention to lodge a formal complaint with the International Olympic Committee regarding FIFA President Gianni Infantino's alleged breaches of political neutrality obligations. The group previously filed a complaint with FIFA's Ethics Committee in December 2025, citing multiple instances where Infantino publicly expressed support for Trump's actions and policies.
The complaint centers on Article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which requires political neutrality in official dealings. Violations carry penalties ranging from fines of at least 10,000 Swiss francs to bans lasting up to two years from football-related activities. FairSquare's submission also requests investigation into the creation of FIFA's annual Peace Prize and the decision to award it to Trump at the World Cup draw, questioning whether these decisions were made by the FIFA Council or unilaterally by Infantino.
FairSquare characterizes any unilateral action by Infantino without statutory authority as an egregious abuse of power. While FIFA's Investigatory Chamber Secretariat acknowledged receiving the complaint, the organization has provided no indication that a formal investigation has commenced. IOC President Kirsty Coventry stated that no complaint had yet been received but indicated the ethics commission would examine any submission. FairSquare previously launched a public reform campaign called Reboot and secured backing from 50 European Parliament members and the Norwegian Football Federation for its complaint.
