Prosecutors in US lay out case against alleged killer of Charlie Kirk
Prosecutors in Utah presented evidence during a preliminary hearing against Tyler Robinson, accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk in September. The five-day hearing will determine whether sufficient grounds exist to proceed to trial, with prosecutors expected to present a confession note, text messages, and witness testimony.
A Utah court began proceedings to assess whether prosecutors have established probable cause to bring Tyler Robinson to trial for the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The preliminary hearing, which commenced Monday and is scheduled to span five days, represents the initial phase in determining whether the evidence warrants a full trial.
The courtroom proceedings drew significant attention, with Kirk's family members present alongside prominent political figures including Donald Trump Jr. and far-right activist Jack Posobiec. Robinson appeared in court with his legal team, restrained with shackles, and has not yet entered a plea. His defense attorneys have attempted unsuccessfully to exclude capital punishment as a potential sentence, while former President Trump has publicly called for Robinson to face the death penalty.
Prosecutors opened their case by calling Utah Valley University police officer Chris Bagley, who described the shooting incident on campus and subsequent investigation. Bagley testified about discovering indentations in gravel near a building that he characterized as a potential sniper position. During cross-examination, the defense highlighted gaps in evidence collection, noting that an empty pistol holster found at the scene was never secured for fingerprint analysis.
The prosecution's case is expected to include what authorities describe as a written confession from Robinson, along with text messages in which he allegedly admitted involvement. Additionally, video testimony from Robinson's roommate and romantic partner is anticipated. The defense strategy appears focused on challenging the conclusiveness of ballistics evidence, as testing could not definitively link a bullet fragment recovered from Kirk's body to the alleged murder weapon.
Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization, and was recognized for mobilizing younger voters in support of Trump. Following Kirk's death, Trump attributed the killing to "radical left" ideology and pledged to pursue enforcement actions against liberal organizations and donors.
